Apart from the possible gay reference with 'tin soldier', once a common term, I guess the liberal use of substances of uncertain legality must have been the main inspiration for this song - it's constant repetition on the radio in 1967 nearly drove me mad! You can see the elephants eye top right!

 

I looked in the sky where an elephant's eye
Was looking at me from a bubble-gum tree.......
I walked through a field that just wasn't real
With 100 tin soldiers which stood at my shoulder
